  • Brazil became the first nation to win a World Cup title outside of its own continent when they defeated Sweden 5-2 in the 1958 final.
  • The Olympic football tournament is the only international competition in football organized by FIFA that Brazil has never won.
  • Incredibly, the 2002 World Cup Final was the first time that the two most successful teams in World Cup history; Brazil and Germany has ever met in a Final match. Brazil triumphed 2-0.
  • After winning the Jules Rimet Trophy for the third time in the 1970 final, Brazil were allowed to keep it for good.
  • Brazil is the only country to have appeared in every tournament, with 19 appearances from 1930 to 2010. They have also won a record five trophies with their brand of attacking, free-flowing style. There is a saying about the South American side’s relationship with football: ‘The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it.’
  • The Brazilian national team have numerous nicknames. Some of the common ones include A SeleÇão (‘The Selection’), Canarinha (‘Little Canary’), Verde e Amarelo (‘Green and Yellow’), Esquadr?o de Ouro (‘The Golden Squad’) and the Samba Kings.
  • Brazil’s most popular player ever is Pele, the side’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals. Nicknamed O Rei do Futebol (‘The King of Football’) during his career, Pele was so popular in his time that in 1967, rival factions involved in the Nigerian Civil War agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire so they could watch Pele play an exhibition game in Lagos.
  • Brazilians are fanatical about their team. Case in point: the highest attendance at a World Cup match was an astounding 199,854 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janerio for the 1950 decider between Uruguay and Brazil. Uruguay won the match 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets in football history, and the match has since been known as the Maracanazo (translated as ‘The Maracan? Blow’)
  • Among all teams, Brazil has scored the most goals in the tournament’s history with 201. They account for almost 10% of all goals scored (which is 2,063).
